Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason will not play tonight after being hit in the mask with a shot by Colton Gillies during this morning's pregame skate. The Blue Jackets, in turn, signed former University of Michigan goaltender Shawn Hunwick to a one-day amateur tryout agreement. He will back up Allen York tonight against the Detroit Red Wings in a nationally televised game in Nationwide Arena. Hunwick is the younger brother of Colorado Avalanche defenseman Matt Hunwick. Mason will continue to be evaluated by medical staff. His health will determine if the Blue Jackets sign Hunwick or another goaltender to a regular contract for the rest of the season. Six games remain. Hunwick, 24, had a remarkable career at Michigan before the Wolverines were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament with a 3-2 overtime loss to Cornell on Friday. The lightly recruited, 5-foot-7 goalie was a walk-on who ended his career as Michigan's all-time leader in goals-against average (2.05) and save percentage (.928). Hunwick, undrafted, was 24-12-3 with a 2.00 gaa and .932 save percentage for Michigan this season.
