Gomes who was on trial with the Premier League champions last summer was widely expected to join United when he turned 18 but as of yet no deal has materialised. According to reports in Brazil United are still Gomes' first choice destination despite Sao Paulo desperate to tie up a deal. United still hold first refusal over Gomes however the club's rights to sign the Desportivo Brazil youngster do not apply if a bid is received above a certain level. Sir Alex Ferguson was a huge admirer of Gomes and his successor David Moyes is likely to step up his efforts to sign the 17-year-old amid interest from Real Madrid Udinese and Sao Paulo. Moyes saw his United side bounce back from successive defeats at the weekend to beat Sunderland thanks to two superb finishes from Adnan Januzaj. The United manager expressed his desire after that result to keep the exciting prospect at Old Trafford with a number of European sides monitoring his contract talks with the club.
