General manager Martin Mayhew offered a little teaser about the Lions' plans for their own unrestricted free agents Friday morning. "I'll put it like this, and maybe you guys can identify them, but there are about nine guys that we really are focused on of the 22," he said. "And there are a bunch of other guys. There are some guys that we're very focused on, and I won't prioritize it. That's where we are." Clearly, one of those nine is defensive end Cliff Avril. "We'll be talking with Cliff's agent today at some point," he said. "I plan to hook up with him at some point today and keep that dialogue going. We spend a lot of time talking to the agents for our players. We've had a lot of those meetings, and we have some more to come. "It's been a good week as far as moving forward on those things. I think there's a lot of value to the face-to-face time. It's different than calling a guy up and catching him in the office when he's talking about 50 different guys." It's a safe bet that cornerback Chris Houston is also among the nine. Others could include outside linebackers DeAndre Levy and Justin Durant, safety Louis Delmas, kicker Jason Hanson, defensive end Lawrence Jackson, defensive tackle Sammie Hill, offensive tackle Corey Hilliard and perhaps special teams ace Kassim Osgood. About Delmas, though, Mayhew said the team was still evaluating his medical situation. Delmas has had knee surgeries the last two seasons. "Injury questions always come into play," he said. "You want to know what you are buying. I think that factors in for a lot of our free agents. Our doctors are still evaluating that situation. We're still making that decision."
