The Detroit Lions reportedly will be down another player Thursday night when they face the Cleveland Browns in their second preseason game. Tight end Matt Veldman has sprained his right Achilles tendon according to the Detroit Free Press and will not play against the Browns (7:30 p.m. WXYZ-TV). Veldman suffered the injury while running a route during Tuesday's practice. He completed the catch but then pulled up lame and limped off the field. He was later spotted in the locker room wearing a boot. Veldman signed with the Lions on June 17 and was competing with undrafted free agent Joseph Fauria for a roster spot. He played four snaps last week in the preseason opener against the New York Jets. A former North Dakota State star Veldman signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars last year as an undrafted free agent. He tore an ACL in the preseason and never played for the Jags.
