Let the roster trimming begin. The Lions got a head start Friday on getting the roster down to 75 which has to happen by Aug. 27 by releasing five players — receiver Chaz Schilens cornerbacks Domonique Johnson and Ross Weaver offensive lineman Derek Hardman and defensive tackle John Drew. Drew signed last week practiced only once before being injured. Weaver a Michigan State product has not practiced in three weeks because of a leg injury. Both were placed on the waived-injured list. The Lions signed Schilens a veteran who played for the Jets last season hoping he could win the third receiver spot. He never showed he could be the deep threat they were hoping for.
