LIONEL MESSI, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta have told Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde to prioritise the signing of David Alaba over Antoine Griezmann, according to reports. Diario Gol say that the key trio believe a big-name defender, namely Bayern Munich’s Alaba, is more important than engineering a massive deal to sign Atletico Madrid striker Griezmann. Gerard Pique caused concerns by limping around for much of Sunday’s crucial top-of-the-table victory over Atletico which took Barca a huge step closer to the La Liga title. Pique is currently playing through the pain of a knee injury and Valverde said after his side’s win that they will continue to risk him starting the centre-back as his injury is “not a big problem.” But behind the ageing Spain international, Barca are left with the Thomas Vermaelen as the only senior back-up option to partner Samuel Umtiti in the heart of defence. And Diario Gol suggest that the injury-prone Belgian is not too highly regarded within Barca’s squad or coaching staff, despite a recent run in which he helped keep nine clean sheets in 12 games.
