Former Toronto Raptors and Minnesota Timberwolves coach Sam Mitchell is a candidate to join the New Orleans Pelicans staff as an assistant under coach Alvin Gentry, The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday night. When executive vice president of basketball operations Mickey Loomis announced May 15 that general manager Dell Demps and Gentry would return for the 2017-18 season, he said the evaluation of the coaching staff was not yet complete, indicating changes could be imminent. Mitchell, who was hired by the Raptors in 2004, was selected the 2007 NBA Coach of the Year after leading them to a 47-35 record and a division title before being fired after an 8-9 start the following season.
