Chad Bettis’ debut created a pair or roster casualties. Jeff Francis was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs to make room on the 25-man roster and Josh Sullivan an oft-injured Triple-A reliever was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Francis pitched once out of the bullpen in his new role allowing two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings on 45 pitches. The Rockies are likely to bring him back in a long relief role at some point this season. Sullivan was kept last winter at the expense of big leaguer Josh Roenicke who was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins. Sullivan never gained traction this season because of a hip injury. Bettis makes his debut against a Braves team that has scored 29 runs in the first three games of this series. The Rockies will also be shorthanded. Carlos Gonzalez avoided the disabled list with his sprained right middle finger but needs a few days of rest. If he re-aggravates the finger again he will likely be put on the DL according to manager Walt Weiss.
