Brett Lawrie is a high risk/high reward type of player who brings a lot of fire and energy and passion to the game. However, there are times where those same qualities work against him and his desire to succeed, to push the envelope, backfires on him and the team. In Friday's loss to Boston, Lawrie was thrown out twice on the basepaths when he attempted to gain an extra base. His more egregious error on the bases occurred in the eighth when standing at second, Yunel Escobar hit a routine grounder to his right. Baseball 101 in that situation calls for the runner to go back to second. If the ball had been hit behind him, then take off for third. It's that simple. Lawrie, however, took off for third and was easily erased.
