The New York Islanders probably won’t announce it, but Chris Johnston of the Toronto Star reports that the team is bringing Erik Gustafsson to training camp on a professional tryout.

Gustafsson, 29, actually ranked 44th among our list of the top 50 unrestricted free agents this offseason, but even then we projected a one-year, low-money deal for the enigmatic defenseman. It’s not often you can get a blue-liner who scored 60 points in 2018-19 on a PTO, but that’s exactly how poorly the league thinks of Gustafsson’s defensive contributions.
