The football future of Bobby Roundtree, one of the Big Ten’s best pass rushers, may now be in doubt.

Roundtree, a defensive end for Illinois, suffered a severe spinal injury during a swimming incident on Saturday, according to 247Sports, and underwent surgery on Sunday. Illinois coach Lovie Smith, defensive line coach Austin Clark and an athletic trainer went to Florida to be with Roundtree, per 247.

“Bobby Roundtree is exactly what you want in a student-athlete,” Smith said, according to 247. “He is a hard worker, dependable, a dedicated student and a leader. This is devastating to his teammates, the entire Fighting Illini family and his family and friends. We will give Bobby all the support possible as he battles through his recovery. Please keep Bobby and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”
