On the day where Bayern Munich and RB Leizpig square-off, it is only fitting that we start to see some of the behind-the-scenes action leak out about why the Bavarians did not make a move to acquire Timo Werner over the summer.

According to Bild (behind the Bild+ paywall), Bayern Munich had numerous discussions on the high-scoring 23-year-old internally, but ultimately could not come to a consensus. In the report from Bild, Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness was a driving force in trying to bring in the Germany international.

Not everyone in the offices at Säbener Strasse, however, was in agreement. Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžic cast doubt on whether or not Werner would be a fit with the club and if he could thrive in “Bayern’s style of play.” Niko Kovac reportedly was also unsure of how Werner would integrate into the Bavarian side.
