A couple of weeks ago I spoke with USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo for recent stories on Paul George and George Hill. We also talked briefly about Roy Hibbert. The Pacers center would have been a likely invite to the USA Basketball minicamp in July that after his sterling playoff performance but he played for the Jamaican national team in one game in a FIBA-sponsored event in 2010. FIBA is basketball’s international governing body. (Those of you in Indianapolis back in 2002 probably remember seeing that acronym a lot when the World Championships were held here.) According to its rules a player can not switch from one country to another to play internationally “unless the switch to a new country puts it in position to aid the development of basketball in that country.” Considering how entrenched basketball is in the United States that would seem a difficult argument to make.
Hibbert probably will never play for the U.S. national team
