There’s been lots of talk about Jamie Benn during this playoff series, but Lindy Ruff had a lengthy quote about the Stars captain this morning. Ruff was asked what he knew about Benn before coming to Dallas. “I didn’t know a lot about 90 percent of the players, which was the exciting part about having a new job. Every player I coached previously, I had known since they were drafted, since they were in the league,” Ruff said. “He was out West, I didn’t know a lot about him, didn’t know much about character, didn’t know what his skill level was actually like, how his compete was going to be under the gun. But from Day 1, I’ve just been impressed with the whole package. It’s the whole package. It’s his compete, it’s his will to win. I think he showed on the Olympic stage, kept moving up, kept moving up, and did a hell of a job there. He’s done the same thing here. He started out as this quiet captain, and you don’t become this great captain where, I put a C on you and you and, “Oh, I’m the captain now.” That evolves, that’s a process.” He continued: “He’s had some disappointments in his career, but I think he’s proved that when he’s gotten in tough situations, playoff situations, you can check his numbers, he’s rose to those occasions,” Ruff said. “He wasn’t invited to Canada’s camp, and there was a reason for it. He worked his way onto that list. He started at the bottom there, and he worked his way up from there again. Those are all tremendous accomplishments on his part.” And then Ruff finished a strong statement that indicates the coach still likes some old-time hockey, some Eddie Shore, some putting on the foil.
