And the first Giant to go on the disabled list in the regular season is reliever Jeremy Affeldt, who will be placed on the 15-day DL with a strained right oblique. Big right-hander Jean Michi has been recalled from Triple-A Fresno and is on his way to Milwaukee, though manager Bruce Bochy was not sure the 31-year-old will get here in time for the game. Affeldt had a rough series in Chicago, but Bochy said Affeldt told him he did not feel pain while pitching. He reported stiffness on the Monday off day. An MRI on Tuesday morning confirmed the strain. This is not a new injury for Affeldt. He strained the same muscle in 2004 and missed nearly two months. In 2010 he strained the left oblique, an odd injury for a left-handed pitcher, and missed 3 1/2 weeks, so the Giants could be without one of their top setup men for a while. Machi made his big-league debut with the Giants lats year and allowed five runs in 6 2/3 innings. He has pitched five scoreless innings for Fresno thus far. Bochy said Heath Hembree and Dan Runzler were considered. “We just decided to go with Machi right now,” Bochy said. “He’s throwing the ball well. We really haven’t had a good luck at him up here. We like the way he threw the ball all spring, so he’ll get the first look.” The Giants still have two left-handed relievers, Javier Lopez and Jose Mijares. Chad Gaudin could see more time in the later innings.
