Pau Gasol responded with some data of his own after he was asked for his reaction on David Fizdale’s rant criticizing the referees following Game 2 of the Spurs’ first-round playoff series against Memphis. “I didn’t get to the free-throw line yet this series,” Gasol said Wednesday. After the Grizzlies’ 96-82 loss to the Spurs on Monday, Fizdale called the officiating “unacceptable” and “unprofessional.” He said that even though he’s a rookie coach and Gregg Popovich has pedigree, he’s not going to allow his team to get “rooked.” He listed a bunch of stats to point out the disparity in fouls called, then said, “Take that for data,” before slapping the table and walking off. Fizdale was assessed a $30,000 fine Wednesday for his comments. “I think he’s just trying to motivate his team, stand up for his team, that’s it,” Gasol said. “There’s no other twist about it. You have to get your team going, and you do it whichever way is necessary, I guess.” The Spurs shot 32 free throws in Game 2, more than twice as many as the Grizzlies (15). Kawhi Leonard alone shot more free throws than the Grizzlies (19), and he made each of those shots.
