Ryan Smyth was the bubble boy. He was on the bubble to make the team as the coaches agonized over the decision past midnight. Back when Don Hay last coached Canada at the IIHF World Junior Championships 17 years ago, the last time the event was held in Alberta, the kid who went on to become known as Captain Canada, was truly a last-call decision. Remarkable the way it worked out. The next game Ryan Smyth plays for the Edmonton Oilers, Thursday in Phoenix, will be his 1,100th NHL game.
