Franz Wagner is going to the Orlando Magic.
The former Michigan basketball star was selected in the first round of the 2021 NBA draft with the No. 8 overall pick, becoming the highest Wolverine taken since Nik Stauskas went No. 8 overall in 2014. Wagner is also the first player of coach Juwan Howard to be drafted.
Three picks earlier at No. 5, Orlando selected Gonzaga guard Jalen Suggs.
He was commonly projected to go between Nos. 7 and 10 overall leading up to the draft. The 6-foot-9, 220-pound wing finished a standout sophomore season in 2020-21 during which he started all 28 games and averaged 12.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 blocks.
Wagner was a second-team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches and a third-team selection by the media; he was also a member of the Associated Press All-Big Ten second team.
