Former University of Kentucky assistant athletic director Leon A. Smith was indicted by a federal grand jury last week for defrauding professional athletes of more than $1.2 million. Smith, a Louisville native who played football for UK in the mid-1990s, served as director of men's basketball operations and was an assistant athletic director from 2006-09, faces felony charges of fraud, money laundering and aggravated identity theft. If found guilty of all charges, Smith could face more than 30 years in prison. A UK spokesman said the university "will not be commenting on this ongoing legal matter." Smith offered a variety of services to professional athletes through businesses he owned and operated, including Legacy Pro Management Group LLC, LSMG LLC and Legacy Athlete Management LLC, according to the indictment.
