Recently fired Grizzlies coach David Fizdale confirmed Wednesday he had a contentious relationship with star center Marc Gasol. "That's the league, I mean, the best player and the coach aren't always gonna get along, and that's just how it goes sometimes," Fizdale told The Jump. "He (referring to Tracy McGrady) was the best player on teams and I'm sure he didn't always love his coach, it was just unfortunate circumstances how it all played out on the stage, but that's just normal stuff, and, you know, whether we like each other or not, that's not what it's about, it's about winning games and it's about us working hard together and getting W's." According to CBS Sports, one of the big reasons Fizdale was fired by the Grizzlies was "irreconcilable differences" with Gasol. The moment when all of their issues came to a head was during a game in November when Fizdale benched Gasol for the remainder of a game while Memphis was in the midst of an eight-game losing streak. The Grizzlies' coach was out of the job two days later. His firing was met with much confusion from both executives and NBA players alike, as even LeBron James expressed puzzlement on Twitter for the move. But as Fizdale said, "That's just how it goes sometimes."
