Leland Irving was hooked so early, you’d think Mike Keenan was the coach. Fellow Calgary Flames goalie Joey MacDonald didn’t fare any better between the pipes. Based on the 5-2 score of Friday’s embarrassment at the hands of the St. Louis Blues, it would be easy to start the search for yet another goalie to take the reins and/or start praying harder for Miikka Kiprusoff to return sooner than expected. To pin that abomination on the two netminders would be more cruel and unfair punishment after what their Flames teammates put them through in a dismal first-period performance that cost them a game. “We shouldn’t even be talking about our goalies tonight. We just didn’t give them a chance,” said Flames head coach Bob Hartley. “We handed them the game. A couple of bad turnovers in the first period in our zone, giveaways, and that’s a team simply too deep in talent to give them point-blank shots.
