Marcos Rojo was ready to join Everton on deadline day but a deal could not be agreed with Manchester United.

The Blues were trying to take the defender on loan for the season but the Old Trafford club only wanted to sell the Argentinian.

Everton had prioritised the signing of a centre-half in the final days of the window after admitting defeat in their pursuit of Chelsea's Kurt Zouma, their No1 target.

A loan enquiry for Chris Smalling was knocked back on Wednesday before Marco Silva turned to Rojo, a player he tried to sign last summer, in a late bid to bolster Everton's backline.
