Jimmy Howard is used to being a go-to guy, but any role will do on a stage this spectacular. After getting a good night’s sleep, Howard put in a good practice Tuesday for Team USA, which begins its preliminary round Thursday against Detroit Red Wings teammate Tomas Tatar’s Slovakia. Howard spent Tuesday morning walking around the Olympic Park with his mom, dad and sister, who are his closest entourage at the Olympics. His closest companion is Livonia’s Ryan Kesler, with whom Howard rooms. “I know him from back in the day,” Howard said. “We were at the U.S. program together, we go way back, it’s good to be able to room with someone you know.” Howard isn’t likely to play at the Games, barring injuries to both Ryan Miller and Jonathan Quick. Quick today was named the starter for the U.S.’s opening game. “We’re dealing with a position of strength when it comes to the goaltender decision,” said U.S. coach Dan Bylsma of Muskegon.
