England boss Gareth Southgate wants tougher punishment for those guilty of racist abuse in football after Bulgaria got off lightly for instances of abuse in their match against The Three Li

Southgate said sanctions for racism in football need to get tougher after Bulgaria escaped with a fine and a one-match stadium ban for the abuse their fans handed out to England’s players.

But the Three Lions boss refused to jump aboard the bandwagon of saying that the team should be booted out of the Euro 2020 play-offs which they are set to contest in March.

“I think the sanctions are going to have to get higher and higher, but I couldn’t honestly tell you what the right answer for that would be,” he said.

“In some respects, if we had thrown Bulgaria out of the competition, that would’ve been easy.
