The New Jersey Devils landed the crown jewel of NHL free agency on Wednesday afternoon.

They made a splash as the signing period got underway, inking defenseman Dougie Hamilton to a contract believed to be in excess of $60 million over seven seasons, according to Nick Kypreos of Line Movement.

The 28-year-old defenseman spent his last three of nine seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. He was voted to the NHL Second All-Star team last season after scoring 10 goals, dishing out 32 assists and finishing with a plus-20 rating in 55 games.
