Dominic Smith’s spring training is off to a rough start. The second-year first baseman, who is far from assured a spot on the Mets roster, was scratched from the lineup Friday as punishment for arriving late to work. Smith was replaced at first base for the Mets’ Grapefruit League opener against the Braves by Peter Alonso. Players were required to be present for an 8:45 a.m. meeting, and Smith said he was late enough for it to become an issue. “I was late a little bit today and I am human, I apologize, and that is stuff that shouldn’t happen,” the 22-year-old Smith said. “It’s not acceptable in any locker room, whether it’s the Mets or wherever you play. It’s not acceptable and I am not in [the lineup] and it’s something that won’t happen again.”
