The Dolphins announced on Sunday they have released S T.J. McDonald.

While McDonald is a starting-caliber safety, it’s clear the Dolphins are going with younger options as they try to rebuild.

Cutting McDonald actually cost the Dolphins $494,000 in cap space, per Over The Cap. McDonald was set to make $5 million in base salary with $3.6 million still guaranteed in 2019. He counted just over $6 million against the cap in 2019.

McDonald, 28, is a former third-round pick of the Rams back in 2013.
