Alec Wirtjes has spent plenty of time studying the Air Force Falcons offense. And that was before he decided to play for them. On Friday, Wirtjes told The Gazette he would be signing a letter of intent to play with Air Force on Wednesday, national signing day. "I live right across the street (from the academy)," Wirtjes said. "Since I moved here in seventh grade I've gone to as many games as I could. Just to be on the field I've been going to and watching them playing for so long sounds like it would be a really good experience and sounds really fun." For the last two seasons Wirtes has been the quarterback for Discovery Canyon, which runs the same offense as the Falcons. "We modeled a lot of ourselves after what they did," the senior said. "We watched a lot film sessions of Air Force's to see what we could do." Wirtjes was 52 of 108 for 926 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions throwing the ball this season. He carried the ball 100 times for 853 yards (8.53 yards per carry) and 13 touchdowns. "If Alec ends up playing quarterback for them, which he really wants to do," Discovery Canyon coach Shawn Mitchell said, "... I think he'll come in with some experience and knowledge of running that system, and it will make the transition much easier for him."
