Jimmy Hayes can let out a long sigh of relief. He has earned another NHL contract. The Devils brought the 27-year-old right wing to training camp on a Professional Tryout Offer and, on Sunday, announced Hayes had agreed to a one-year deal worth $700,000. Hayes, who will likely fill a bottom-six forward role with the Devils and contribute on the power play, had a strong preseason with two goals and an assist in five games. This despite Hayes getting off to a rocky start with four minor penalties called against him – two hooking infractions, a slashing and a faceoff violation – in the Devils 4-1 win over the Capitals at Prudential Center on Sept. 18 in their preseason opener. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Hayes also provides the Devils with another big body with the playing status of 6-7, 243-pound Brian Boyle in flux after he was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.
