The Devils placed defenseman Anton Volchenkov on injured reserve today with a leg muscle pull. Volchenkov was injured in the first period of the Devils’ 3-2 victory over the Rangers last Tuesday. Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said today that Volchenkov has not skated since he was injured. Volchenkov did not travel with the team this afternoon to Anaheim, where the Devils begin a three-game California road trip Wednesday night against the Ducks. In addition, the Devils activated rookie defenseman Jon Merrill, who has been sidelined since Nov. 3 with a concussion, off injured reserve and returned him to Albany of the AHL. Merrill, 21, was injured just three shifts into his first NHL game when he was tripped from behind by Minnesota’s Torrey Mitchell and fell into the boards. He practiced with the Devils today at Prudential Center, but did not accompany them to Anaheim. With Merrill not on the trip, the Devils have just six defensemen with them. When I asked Devils GM Lou Lamoriello earlier today if he would be comfortable being across the country with only six defensemen, he said, “We’ve done it before.”
