For the second time in four years, Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta asserted themselves in a big September series between the Tigers and Indians. In mid-September 2007, the Tigers came to Cleveland 4 1/2 games behind the Tribe in the American League Central with two weeks left. In the first game, Peralta hit two home runs in the Indians' win. The next night, Martinez put the Indians ahead to stay with a sixth-inning homer off Justin Verlander. The game, series and race belonged to the Indians. On Monday, Martinez opened the scoring with a three-run home run. The score remained 3-0 when the Tribe made its comeback bid in the fifth. Jason Donald opened with a single to center and took second with none out on right-hander Doug Fister's wild pickoff throw.
