Dedric Lawson, KU's best player and starting power forward, was named as the Big 12's Newcomer of the Year by the coaches on Sunday. Lawson was also unanimously selected as a first-team All-Big 12 honoree.
A transfer from Memphis, Lawson sat out with the Jayhawks last season before jumping into a leading role right away in 2018-19. Lawson posted four-straight double-doubles to close out Big 12 play, bringing his total to the year to 20.
He had 15 20-point games this season and 11 games with 14-or-more rebounds. Lawson also improved his 3-point shot in conference play, hitting on better than 40 percent of his looks against Big 12 foes.
