Iona College men's basketball junior David Laury was named MAAC Player of the Week for his performance in the Gaels thrilling 85-73 win over preseason favorite Manhattan Friday night. Laury becomes the fourth different Gael to earn a MAAC weekly award this season. Laury scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 29 minutes off the bench vs the Jaspers and was named the Pepsi Max Player of the Game on the nationally televised ESPNU broadcast. He matched his season-high point total by shooting 6-of-7 from the field (85.7%) and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. The 81.8% free throw percentage was remarkable from Laury as he has struggled from the line this year entering the contest shooting under 50.0%. Laury’s eight rebounds tied for the team-high and he dished out three assists to just one turnover and had a blocked shot in the win. It is the second MAAC Player of the Week honor for Laury in his career as he earned the award a year ago on Feb. 4, 2013. Senior Sean Armand is a two-time Player of the Week this season (Nov. 25 & Dec. 9) while senior Tre Bowman was selected on Dec. 2. Rookie Ryden Hines was the MAAC's Rookie of the Week on Dec. 30. The Gaels have been awarded 23 MAAC Player of the Week accolades in three-plus seasons under head coach Tim Cluess. Following tomorrow night's makeup contest at Monmouth, the Gaels continue a three game road trip in Western New York in their annual “Buffalo Swing” against Niagara and Canisius this weekend. Iona (12-8, 9-2 MAAC) looks to pull even with the Golden Griffins for first place in the MAAC standings while extending their season long winning streak to five games in its game vs. the Hawks Tuesday. Iona is a half-game behind Canisius and two games ahead in the loss column with teams behind them: Manhattan, Quinnipiac and Rider.
