The Mavericks are trying to become the first team in 16 years to make the West playoffs after being 10 games or more below .500 at some point during the season. The last teams to do so, according to Elias Sports Bureau, were the Los Angeles Clippers, who finished 36-46, and the Phoenix Suns (20-36), both in 1996-1997, when 10 games under .500 actually made the playoffs. Phoenix ended 40-42. In the Eastern Conference, it’s been done as recently as 2010-11. But in the West, it’s been a long, long time.
