Per the Chicago Cubs transaction wire tonight, relievers Anthony Kay and Manny Rodriguez were each outrighted to Triple-A Iowa. That means each, who’d previously been designated for assignment to open up a 40-man roster spot, was placed on waivers and went unclaimed. Thus, they cleared waivers, and were subsequently outrighted.
The great news here for the Cubs is that, because neither Kay nor Rodriguez has the right to decline the outright assignment, they get to keep these two arms in the system. They will be free agents after 2023 if they aren’t added to the 40-man roster at some point this season, but for now, they remain in the Cubs organization.
