The Avalanche wrung a hard-fought two points out of New Year's Eve with a 5-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Columbus outshot Colorado 38-23, but the Avs made their shots count against former Colorado College goalie Curtis McElhinney, while Semyon Varlamov was much more stingy at the other end. Five different players scored in the Avs' 24th victory of the season, in its 39th game. Nathan MacKinnon's tap-in power-play goal with 1:03 left cemented the win, the Avs' first in five games. MacKinnon's was one of three power-play goals for the Avs. "The power play finally kind of opened up a little bit for us," said the rookie MacKinnon, whose goal was his 10th of the season. "We finally turned the corner. We finally got two points. We were tired of all those shootout and overtime games lately."
