Chelsea are facing a race against time to complete a loan deal for Gonzalo Higuain so the striker can make his debut in Thursday's Carabao Cup semi-final clash against bitter rivals Tottenham.

Higuain must be registered as a Chelsea player by midday on Wednesday in order to play in the tie, which sees Spurs lead 1-0 from the first leg at Wembley.

However, there is no guarantee he would play even if he were to sign in time, with boss Maurizio Sarri notoriously meticulous on preparations with his side.

Chelsea are looking at the striker as a crucial signing for the rest of the season, rather than just the upcoming match.

Higuain flourished under Sarri at Napoli, before moving to Juventus in 2016 and then to AC Milan on loan.

Sarri and the striker enjoyed success together at Napoli before Higuain left for Serie A rivals Juventus in a stunning £76m move back in the summer of 2016.
