Almost 24 hours after suffering his second loss in three nights, closer Chad Qualls delivered a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save and cap a brilliant night for the Astros’ bullpen. “It feels good,” Qualls said after earning his 12th save in the 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays at Minute Maid Park. “Out of the bullpen you’re always just living day to day. Short-term memory. Yesterday I thought I threw the ball well.” Righthander Jose Veras, who earned the victory, threw two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief, took the mound after lefthander Darin Downs pitched a scoreless inning. Qualls handled the ninth at Minute Maid Park. “That’s the thing in the bullpen,” Downs said. “You just have to have a short memory and get back out there. There’s no greater thing than to get back the next night and get the job done.”
