The Detroit Tigers announced five cuts Monday morning. The Tigers have assigned catcher Ramon Cabrera and shortstop Dixon Machado to Double-A Erie and pitcher Melvin Mercedes to Single-A Lakeland. They also assigned outfielder Daniel Fields and infielder Eugenio Suarez to minor-league camp. The Tigers obtained Cabrera from the Pittsburgh Pirates in December in a trade for left-handed pitcher Andy Oliver. Cabrera hit .276 in 112 games at Double-A Altoona last season and has played one game above the Double-A level. He went 1-for-10 this spring for the Tigers. The move leaves the Tigers with four catchers in camp: Alex Avila, Brayan Pena, Bryan Holaday and Brad Davis. Machado went 3-for-9 with two doubles and four RBIs for the Tigers this spring. He hit .195 in 119 games at Single-A Lakeland in 2012.
