The Red Sox [team stats] returned their longtime designated hitter to the disabled list yesterday, David Ortiz [stats]' recent comeback from an Achilles injury having lasted just one game played, and by the time he returns — if he returns at all — this long, sorry train wreck of a season will be in its last days. Looking ahead to 2013, the smart money (no pun intended) is that Ortiz will be back. Ortiz has proved he still can hit, and with Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford gone and the future uncertain for Jacoby Ellsbury [stats] (one season remaining before he's a free agent, which means the Red Sox might trade him), the consensus is that Big Papi will get a new deal.
Careful on signing Papi
