The Cardinals avoided turbulence in the second round of the NFL draft on Friday by flying around it. But they went directly into the storm in the third round. They passed on a chance to draft Notre Dame linebacker Manti, who had a notorious romance with a fake dead girlfriend, and traded down and selecting Louisiana State linebacker Kevin Minter. But in the third round, they selected former LSU defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, who was kicked off the team last summer for violating team rules, including failing drug tests. The Cardinals will be counting upon cornerback Patrick Peterson to mentor Mathieu, a former college teammate. They are close friends, and the two worked out this off-season. They share the same agent, Patrick Lawlor, and Mathieu also spent time working out under the supervision of Peterson’s father, Patrick, for a period this spring. Mathieu, nicknamed “Honey Badger” for a viral video of Mathieu making plays, was a controversial figure through the draft.
