Jedd Gyorko has not yet returned to 100 percent after suffering a hamstring strain in late August, but the St. Louis Cardinals infielder evidently feels healthy enough to contribute to another Cards playoff pursuit. The Cardinals activated Gyorko from the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday but will use him in certain situations for now. Instead of taking his place at third base, where he’s started for 94 games this season, Gyorko will be an off-the-bench contributor in the near future. Gyorko said Wednesday he’s ready to pinch-hit, but the Cardinals will remove him if he reaches base. So, it doesn’t appear likely Gyorko pinch-hit sequences are going to provide a high probability for non-home run extra-base hits, with the fifth-year big-leaguer not yet ready to run bases. But he’ll be back as a key bat for potentially the rest of the stretch run. As for fielding, groundball seasoning began again as well.
