A little more than three hours after the Capitals said farewell to defenseman Jeff Schultz by placing him on unconditional waivers, they announced they have resigned defenseman Tomas Kundratek to a two-year contract worth a reported $1.1 million. Kundratek, 23, is expected to earn $550,000 in each of the next two seasons. With Kundratek’s signing the Caps’ salary cap space dipped to about $8.5 million. They now have 19 players under contract, with restricted free agents Karl Alzner and Marcus Johansson still unsigned. The Caps have retained the rights of Alzner and Johansson by giving them qualifying offers.
