The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Kentwood High School catcher Reese McGuire with the No. 14 pick in the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft. The rare backstop with a strong hit tool, McGuire had been rumored to go as high as the fourth-overall pick before the draft. he was named the 2012-2013 Gatorade Washington Baseball Player of the Year in May after hitting .417 with three home runs, and nine stolen bases while leading Kentwood to a 21-5 record. He brings added value to his position as a left-handed hitter as well. At 6'1 and 190 pounds, McGuire isn't the largest catcher out there, but his defense has already caught scouts' eyes. They call him fundamentally sound defensively, and project his solid approach at the plate to translate to above-average hitting in his future. Any team drafting him will have to make a solid offer to McGuire as he has committed to playing college baseball for the University of San Diego.
