Pirates right-hander A.J. Burnett was on. So was Cincinnati Reds righty Johnny Cueto. Burnett won the battle of the aces Wednesday, as Matt Hague smacked a two-run double to lift the Pirates to a 2-1 victory. "We needed a big outing from A.J. tonight to match up with Cueto," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "You can watch a lot games, but you won't see better pitching than what you saw tonight on both sides." Burnett (4-2) won his third consecutive start. He worked seven innings and allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out three. Cueto (5-3) also went seven and gave up two runs and five hits. "He always pitches good," Burnett said. "I finally got to go up against him. It's always fun going up against those guys. It was definitely a defensive game tonight."
