Former Giants and Rams receiver Steve Smith, who four years ago had a 1,200 yard season with New York, has signed a one-year contract with the Bucs. Smith, whose production has plummeted since that stellar 107-catch, 1,220-yard 2009 season, reunites with Bucs offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan in Tampa. Sullivan was the Giants’ receivers coach when the team drafted Smith out of USC in 2007. After spending 2012 with the Rams, catching just 14 passes for 131 yards, Smith joins the Bucs on a deal that will pay him $715,000 with a $65,000 workout bonus. He’ll attempt to resurrect a career that seemed headed for big things after 2009. Instead, Smith’s performance has steadily declined since then. But, according to his agent, Ben Dogra, Smith, 27, is hopeful about his opportunity with the Bucs because he already knows Sullivan’s offense.
