The Red Sox have placed catcher Sandy Leon on outright waivers, according to WEEI’s Evan Drellich. Leon will either be claimed by a club or clear waivers in the next 48 hours.
Boston carried three catchers last year (Leon, Christian Vazquez and Blake Swihart) but will only carry two this season due to the impending return of Dustin Pedroia. With Vazquez and Swihart both emerging as strong candidates to make the Opening Day roster, it became clear that Leon would be the odd man out.
The Sox shopped Leon in trades throughout the winter but were clearly unable to find a taker. Now, they’ll find out whether he’ll go to another team via waiver claim or stay in the organization.
