The Cardinals are expected to activate first baseman Lance Berkman from the disabled list before today's game against the Cincinnati Reds. Manager Mike Matheny described the move as written in pencil until Berkman arrives at Great American Ball Park today free of discomfort following a Friday workout. Less than two months removed from what he initially thought could be career-threatening right knee surgery, Berkman took early batting practice against Matheny on Friday afternoon. The Puma emerged confident that he is ready to contribute, albeit on a sporadic basis, for the first time since the knee caused him to buckle at Dodger Stadium on May 19. Matheny declined to offer any direction on what might be the companion move to activating Berkman; however, outfielder Shane Robinson appears most vulnerable.
