Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman described himself as "doubtful" for the first home series of the season, against he Chicago Cubs that is set to begin Friday, because of a muscle strain in his left leg that could take several days to heal. "If it gets any worse, then it becomes an issue," said Berkman, who did not play Wednesday and officially is designated by the club as day-to-day. "We'll have to wait and see how it responds." Berkman felt a twinge in his left calf while legging out a triple during the Cardinals' 3-1 victory at Great American Ball Park on Tuesday night. He remained in the game but was lifted for a pinch runner after singling in the eighth. Manager Mike Matheny told Berkman at the hotel later that night that he would not be in the lineup for the series finale. The manager also fought the urge to play David Freese or Carlos Beltran, both of whom had been told they would get the day off before Berkman's injury.
