For the second straight practice the Bengals have seen a player go down with an ankle injury. This one though might have a more significant bearing on their roster. Wide receiver Andrew Hawkins injured his left ankle diving for a pass from Andy Dalton a half hour into Thursday’s practice hosted in front of 6500 inside Paul Brown Stadium. Hawkins tried to put pressure on the ankle but couldn’t and was assisted by trainers off the field. He was then carted to the locker room. “I don’t know what happened” said Marvin Lewis who saw defensive tackle Larry Black carted off during Wednesday’s practice with a dislocated ankle. “I know he shouldn’t dive for the ball. I keep harping on the same thing.” Hawkins who was the primary slot receiver last season was third on the team in receptions (51) and receiving yards (533). He was also expected to see time as a kick or punt returner during the preseason and serves as the starting gunner on punt coverage. It has been a tough training camp for the receivers as A.J. Green is out with a knee bruise and Marvin Jones has also been banged up. Regardless of how long Hawkins will be out Lewis knows the team loses more than just an explosive slot.
